Solanum stramoniifolium occurs in northern South America east of the Andes, and in Trinidad and Tobago. It grows on well drained soils in tropical savannas, at forest edges, along riverbanks, and in disturbed areas (pastures, fields, thickets, roadsides, etc.); at 0-600 m. Erect or spreading shrub up to 2 m in height. Stems and leaves coarsely prickly or unarmed; leaves large, lobed or ovate, pubescent. Inflorescences axillary, unbranched, with 12-30 flowers. Flowers campanulate, petals white to purple. Fruits globose, orange or red, densely pubescent. Pollinated by bees.
